Phi, or Φ in the ancient Greek alphabet, represents the golden section in science and mathematics. In the instance of this sculpture, it dictates the increase of one small square by a ratio of 1 to 6180, and can theoretically be built upon to create an ever expanding artwork. This in turn is part of a constantly expanding project documenting key sculptural materials used over the last five years. Its first iteration with a large concrete square, plywood, plasterboard, chipboard and a hidden slice of cork can itself be remixed to create different relationships between colour and texture, while maintaining the rhythmic proportions of the golden section.
This artwork was part of the One Size Fits All charity exhibition organised by Arts at the Old Fire Station, Oxford, 2017. For this show, artists were invited to exhibit and sell an A5 artwork to fund collaborations with the arts centre and Crisis, its partner charity working with homeless and vulnerably housed adults.
