This solo exhibition by Rotterdam-based sculptor Jack Eden invites you to view the freedom and experimentation that comes before the clarity and precision of a finished artwork. Wall Work is an intimate glimpse behind the scenes of this creative process, featuring unseen calculations, drawings, writings, maquettes, mistakes, wall-sculptures, printed ephemera and photography.

Art in a domestic space

Art gains a unique vulnerability in the domestic context. Shown in a private home amongst sofas and bookcases, Wall Work reflects on the privacy of space and the privacy of process. Fostering new dialogues between artist and viewer, the exhibition translates the private into public, production into presentation, and the by-product of the creative process into legitimate artwork.

Flattening three dimensions

The predominantly two-dimensional artefacts in Wall Work represent an infrastructure that supports the physical and conceptual lifespan of a sculpture. In turn, the three-dimensional is distributed on websites and social media through video or photography, illustrating a demonstrable necessity for the re-flattening of a sculpture for its communication. This leads the artist to ask if an artwork can maintain its value under such circumstances. Is the suggested physicality of an object โ€“ say, through construction drawings โ€“ more informative than the object's flattened image?
